Belgian architect Raf Dauwe of OOS in Zürich brings to KOYA a wealth of international experience in house construction and design, as well as a gift for dreaming in optimal technical solutions.
"When you get over the Gotthard Pass, a whole new world awaits. The weather changes, the climate is different, people are speaking another language. It's like a magical border. And Andermatt is just across the divide.
If you come to visit, you come to ski and to hike, to be outside, to really experience nature. KOYA was designed to reflect this active lifestyle by providing a practical space that is also comfortable and welcoming.
Through mezzanine-style apartments that are multi-use and connected to communal areas, we wanted to give you the most through our design while still remaining sensible. That way you don’t end up with, say, a dining room you never use. It’s also an eco-friendly way of doing things.
The barrier between outside and inside is just as flexible as the interiors. The ground floor housing the shared spaces opens through big windows onto a surrounding winter garden and the piazza beyond. In winter, this creates a sense of sheltered cosiness. In summer, the windows can be opened to let in the outside.
The whole concept of KOYA is based on connectivity. On the large scale and in the detail: the cladding of the interior walls becomes part of the benches you sit on and the platform you sleep on. This multi-purpose design creates moments of joy. Take the winter garden. It transforms into a space you can sit and read your newspaper, while you wait for someone to finish getting ready. And, though you may just spend 10 minutes here, they will be a nice 10 minutes."
